BigOceanData is a vessel tracking tool used by thousands across the world’s oceans. It provides features such as integrated weather zone and wave height forecast, multiple device support and combined maritime and Google mapping.
Prior to working with Control F1, BigOceanData’s system was still running locally on in house servers, which exposed the business to risk and costs that could be significantly mitigated through migrating to the cloud.
The BigOceanData team had also identified the unique value that their geospatial data could provide for the international shipping industry if it could be processed, managed and combined with other data sources effectively, and were seeking a telematics partner with whom they could join forces.
With our deep experience in cloud migration we began by re-architecting BigOceanData’s existing technology into a cloud solution.
Working together with Nottingham University we also provided the necessary telematics knowhow BigOceanData needed to secure funding from Innovate UK for a ground-breaking Research and Development project.
The on-going project focuses on how to store and manage big data from multiple sources in the maritime world. This will help to generate contextual intelligence that can be shared with the shipping community to identify trends in areas as far reaching as port movements and piracy.
Through migrating its vessel tracking tool to the cloud, Control F1 has helped BigOceanData to substantially reduce its exposure to risk and cost. The new cloud solution also allows for swifter scalability, as well as dramatically increasing the speed at which data can be accessed and processed.
Over 10 million vessel data items can now be stored and managed per day, and further analysed against 100,000 separately defined geo-fences. This in turn allows for the generation of value added data, market intelligence and forecasting information.
